DEFINITION

Under Parish Administrator direction, is responsible for field enforcement of parish and state (where applicable) animal control ordinances in an effective and humane manner; investigates litter violations and performs related work as required. 

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Captures unlicensed, stray, uncontrolled, sick or injured animals by means of traps, catch pole or other accepted means and transports them to the parish designated animal control center. Duties may include euthanizing animals and disposing of carcasses. Works in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies; testifies in court regarding violations. Handles, prepares and/or maintains the appropriate paperwork necessary to the functions of this position; performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Drives and maintains animal control unit. Operates two-way radio; maintains equipment.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of the Parish Ordinances and state laws as they apply to animal control, litter, and abuse of parish roads; knowledge of the parish roads. Knowledge of the techniques used in capturing domestic animals, with no fear of handling animals under conditions of extreme stress. Knowledge of the symptoms of rabies and other common animal illnesses. Knowledge of general operating methods and practices of other parishes enforcement agencies. Ability to communicate orally with the public in a professional and tactful manner. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. Ability to possess mature judgment and emotional stability under a wide variety of working conditions. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and ascertain facts through investigations.

 

Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent approved by Louisiana Department of Education.

 

TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:  Experience in animal control work, law enforcement, or related experience preferred.                       

 

LICENSE: Appropriate vehicle operator's license- State of Louisiana. May be required to obtain State of Louisiana Chemical Capture and /or Euthanasia Certification within one year from date of hire.
